Using acoustic analysis and weather radar to evaluate the impact of small-scale artificial light at night (ALAN) on avian populations in rural areas.
Presenter: Dylan Osterhaus, Department of Biology, New Mexico State University
Thursday February 20, 2025 7:00-8:30pm
Dylan Osterhaus, a PhD candidate in Biology, will provide an update on his Ryan Beaulieu grant research. Over two fall migrations, he has collected ~70,000 hours of acoustic recordings of nocturnal flight calls across White Sands Missile Range. The counts being generated from these recordings can be used as a metric of migration activity and compared between lighted and dark sites to determine if small scale ALAN attracts birds in rural locations.
